Wesnoth は、テキストプリプロセッサ言語を実装しており、これは独自のゲームスクリプト言語と併用されます。また、ビルトイン Lua インタープリターおよび API も備えています。Lua API とプリプロセッサは両方とも同じ関数（filesystem::get_wml_location()）を使用してファイルパスを解決し、ユーザーのデータディレクトリからのコンテンツだけを読み込むことができます。しかし、この関数は、.pbl 拡張子のあるファイルを明示的に不許可にしませんでした。このため、これらのファイルのコンテンツが保存されたゲームファイルに保存される、またはネットワークゲーム内の他のユーザーに直接送信される可能性があります。危険にさらされる情報の中には、ゲームのコンテンツサーバーへのアップロードを認証するために使用されるユーザー定義のパスフレーズが含まれます。
