NGINX team reports :

1-byte memory overwrite might occur during DNS server response processing if the 'resolver' directive was used, allowing an attacker who is able to forge UDP packets from the DNS server to cause worker process crash or, potentially, arbitrary code execution.

An update of the nginx package has been released.

This update for nginx fixes the following issues :

CVE-2021-23017: nginx DNS resolver off-by-one heap write (bsc#1186126)

Luis Merino, Markus Vervier and Eric Sesterhenn discovered an off-by-one in Nginx, a high-performance web and reverse proxy server, which could result in denial of service and potentially the execution of arbitrary code.

For Debian 9 stretch, this problem has been fixed in version 1.10.3-1+deb9u6.

  - NGINX before 1.13.6 has a buffer overflow for years that exceed four digits, as demonstrated by a file     with a modification date in 1969 that causes an integer overflow (or a false modification date far in the     future), when encountered by the autoindex module. (CVE-2017-20005)

  - ALPACA is an application layer protocol content confusion attack, exploiting TLS servers implementing     different protocols but using compatible certificates, such as multi-domain or wildcard certificates. A     MiTM attacker having access to victim's traffic at the TCP/IP layer can redirect traffic from one     subdomain to another, resulting in a valid TLS session. This breaks the authentication of TLS and cross-     protocol attacks may be possible where the behavior of one protocol service may compromise the other at     the application layer. (CVE-2021-3618)

  - A security issue in nginx resolver was identified, which might allow an attacker who is able to forge UDP     packets from the DNS server to cause 1-byte memory overwrite, resulting in worker process crash or     potential other impact. (CVE-2021-23017)

The remote host is affected by the vulnerability described in GLSA-202105-38 (nginx: Remote code execution)

    It was discovered that nginx did not properly handle DNS responses when       &ldquo;resolver&rdquo; directive is used.
  Impact :

    A remote attacker, able to provide DNS responses to a nginx instance,       could cause the execution of arbitrary code with the privileges of the       process or a Denial of Service condition.
  Workaround :

    There is no known workaround at this time.
